Embajador Richard Grenell denuncia intimidación

In an exclusive interview with CENTRA NEWS, U.S. Ambassador Richard Grenell expressed deep concern over the aggressive stance taken by the U.S. Embassy towards the Central American country. During the interview, Grenell addressed hot-button issues related to alleged intimidation of Guatemalan conservatives and the use of visas as a pressure instrument.

Grenell stated that he has shared his concerns with U.S. Embassy officials and has used social media as a platform to amplify the concerns expressed by various sectors in Guatemala. According to his statements, there is a perception that those who speak against certain positions may have their visas revoked, and he mentioned cases of travel sanctions and attacks on families of individuals who have expressed dissenting opinions.

Regarding the official stance of the U.S. Embassy, Grenell emphasized that an independent investigation by the Inspector General of the Department of State has been requested to examine internal emails and decisions, with the aim of determining if there is bias or systematic attacks against conservatives in Guatemala. The ambassador insisted on the need for clear responses from the Department of State.

When asked about the legality of the embassy and Department of State actions, Grenell was categorical in stating that any attack on conservatives is illegal and un-American. The call for an independent investigation seeks to clarify the truth of these allegations and determine the legitimacy of the actions taken by the embassy.

“There has been a request for an independent investigation by the Inspector General of the Department of State to look into emails submitted by individuals from the Department of State, the decisions that were made, and to see if there is a targeting against conservatives. Again, what I heard today from the embassy is that they are not doing this. The embassy says no, of course we won’t do that. I provided evidence to say: I believe the attack on conservatives is absolutely happening, and we want answers,” stated Ambassador Richard Grenell.

Regarding the message directed to Guatemala, judges, magistrates, and lawmakers, Grenell reiterated the importance of the relationship between the two countries. He emphasized the need for a trade-based approach and expressed concern about the situation at the U.S.-Guatemala border, blaming Department of State policies for exacerbating the migration crisis.

In relation to alleged threats to judges and magistrates by the embassy, Grenell called on the Guatemalan people to believe in democracy and reject foreign intervention in internal political affairs. He assured that the United States should not use visas as a means of pressure and that the goal should be to strengthen cooperation to address common issues such as corruption, crime, and drugs.
