Nayib Bukele, virtual winner with 90% of votes in his favor
The President of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, is said to have achieved an overwhelming victory in the elections held this Sunday, according to an exit poll conducted by the CID-Gallup polling firm and disseminated by the president himself on his social media account X. According to the data, Bukele would have secured 87% of the voting intention, and according to CID-Gallup’s director, Luis Haug, this figure could even reach 90%, thereby consolidating an unprecedented absolute majority.
In a press conference, Haug emphasized the magnitude of the observed margin in this election, describing it as unprecedented in the history of survey evaluations of different governments and candidates. President Bukele, a 42-year-old former publicist, enjoys overwhelming popularity at 90%, which, according to analysts, poses no significant threats to his second term.
Despite criticisms portraying him as an autocratic leader, Bukele maintains a high level of popularity in Latin America, according to the 2023 Latinobarómetro. However, some critics express concerns about the concentration of power in the hands of the president, questioning the health of democracy and human rights in the country.
